Brief summary of the human strenghts (psychology of depression)

In psychology; the mental, emotional and behavioral characteristics pertaining to a specific person, group or activity, there's a new domain of psychology known as positive psychology that began in the year 1998 when Martin Seligman chose it as the theme for his term as the president of the American psychological association.

This he stipulated as a reaction against some past practices which focused on mental illness and emphasized maladaptive behavior and negative thinking.

It was tenered from the humanistic movement of Abraham Maslow, James Bujental, and Carl Rogers, which encouraged and emphasized on happiness, well-being and positivity, thereby creating the primary foundation of what is now known as positive psychology.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

What is positive psychology? Positive psychology as the name suggests is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living, focusing on both individual and societal well-being. Positive psychology focuses on "EUDAIMONIA'' an ancient Greek term for "the good life" and as a point of reflection on the factors that contribute most to a well lived and fulfilling life, giving rise to what is best known today as SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING.

However, one of the key contributions positive psychology has made is supporting individuals to reflect on, consider and identify their core strengths (human strengths) and to utilize them to lead a flourishing life.

SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING

Subjective well-being (SBW) is a self reported measure of well-being, typically obtained by questionnaires. Ed-Diener, an American psychologist, professor, and author Developed a tripartite model of subjective well-being in 1984, which describes how people experience the quality of their lives and includes both emotional reactions and cognitive judgement.

Subjective well-being (SWB) therefore encompasses moods and emotions as well as evaluation of one's satisfaction with general and specific areas of one's life. Subjective well-being is one definition of HAPPINESS.

Although SWB tends to be stable over time and is strongly related to personality traits. The emotional component of SWB can be influenced or impacted by situations and conditions.

Hence, there is evidence that health and SWB may mutually influence each other, as good health tends to be associated with greater Happiness and a number of studies have found that positive emotions and optimism can also have a beneficial influence on health.

Subjective well-being posits three distinct but often related components of well-being. They are:

- frequent positive affect

- infrequent negative affect

- cognitive evaluations such as life satisfaction

In summary, subjective well-being is an overarching ideology that encompasses such things as:

- high levels of pleasant emotions & moods

- low levels of negative emotions & moods

- high life satisfaction

Because subjective well-being (SWB) is closely related to personality traits, SWB records of individuals vary greatly.

PERSONALITY TRAIT

In personality psychology (a branch of psychology that examines personality and its variation among individuals. It aims to show how people are individually different due to "psychological forces" or "personality traits"

Hence, personality traits are those identifying characteristics, habits or trends that influence a person's COGNITION, EMOTION, BEHAVIOR & MOTIVATIONS. Personality also pertains to the pattern of thoughts, feelings, social adjustments and behaviors persistently exhibited over time that strongly influence one's expectations, self perceptions, values, and attitudes. personality also predicts human reactions to other people, problems and stress.

However, the major determinants of the personality traits are what I called "THE HUMAN STRENGTHS" which are greatly influenced, impacted or associated with the human genes transmitted from parents to offsprings. And the good news is, even though the genes that yield forth or that influence these core strengths remains unchangeable, the human strengths itself can be thwarted and reconstructed with a series of activities to influence one's overall personality such as pattern of thoughts i.e cognition, feelings i.e emotions, and even behavior in general. And these made us human; the ability to learn, unlearn and adapt.

COGNITION | EMOTION | BEHAVIOR

COGNITION: This is the process of knowing, of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought and senses.

To strengthen one's cognition, one needs to strengthen his thoughts and senses through learning and unlearning which will in turn keep fastening and sharpening the senses gradually for higher positive impact.

EMOTION:This is a person's internal State of being and involuntary physiological response to an object or situation based on or tied to physical and sensory data.

However, to strengthen one's emotions, one needs to strengthen his physique(increasing agility) and sensory data through EXERCISES which builds agility and RECONCEPTUALIZATION which builds best the sensory data i.ecognition.

BEHAVIOR: This is the way a living creature behaves or acts generally (to conduct oneself well or in a given way). To strengthen one's behavior, one needs to strengthen his cognitions and emotions which are the main determinants of behavioral patterns.

In psychology: cognition, emotion, and behavior are closely related or tied as they form the key foundation or determinants of individual differences or in general "personality" . In cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy that combines two distinct therapeutic approaches (cognitive therapy & behavioral therapy), explained indepthly the relationship between cognition, emotion and behavior as tied to different mental disorders especially depression, and also how they form the primary basis of a sound mental wellness.

As brief and concise as shown in the CBT diagram above, it describes how each of the parameters affects each other and shows the mutual relationship between each parameter which in turn gives rise to either mental wellness or mental disorder.

But even though these parameters can be influenced or affected by one's immediate environs, believes and situations, there is a greater deal in the natural/inbirth trait of a person that affect to a greater percentage their personality than environs and situations do and they are the core determinants of Personality trait; "THE HUMAN STRENGTH"

THE HUMAN STRENGTH

STRENGTH: Strength can be defined as the degree of ability or the capacity to do a thing(the quality or degree of being strong); FORTITUDE .

Hence, HUMAN STRENGTH can be defined as the degree of fortitude in a single human or the degree of human ableness to perform or act in the shallow deep. While human strengths are influenced or tied to natural or inbirth genes which are transmitted from parents to offspring, they are the core determinants of Personality.

In a layman view, what then is Depression, causes, types and treatments?

Depression as stated above is a natural or inborn state of mind producing serious and long term lowering of enjoyment of life or inability to visualize a happy future due to high levels of negative emotions and low levels of positive emotions. However, it's a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest and can interfere with daily functionality.

CAUSES OF DEPRESSION

It is often said that depression results from chemical imbalance in the brain, but the figures of speech don't show how complex the disease is. Research suggests that depression doesn't result from having too much or too little of certain brain chemicals namely serotonin and norepinephrine, Rather there are many causes of depression including: Faulty mood regulation by the brain, Genetic vulnerability, Stressful life events etc(as measured by the psychology of "HUMAN STRENGTHS"). However, It is believed that several of these forces interact to bring on depression.

TYPES OF DEPRESSION

There are many types of Depression and they include the following:

- major depressive Disorder (MDD) or clinical Depression

- persistent depressive Disorder

- Bipolar Disorder

- seasonal affective Disorder

- psychotic Depression

- peripartum(post partum)

- premenstrual dysphoric disorder(PMDD)

- situational Depression

TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION

There are four major types of treatment for depression. They include the following:

- Medications (ANTIDEPRESSANT)

- Psychotherapy

- TMS therapy (transcranial magnetic stimulation)

- ECT (electroconvulsive therapy)

Note: for the purpose of this note, we will focus on Medication treatment (ANTIDEPRESSANTS)

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

ANTIDEPRESSANTS are prescription drugs mainly used for the relief of depressive symptoms in patients diagnosed with depression. Though they relieve the symptoms of depression, they do not cure it. They work by increasing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Aside from increasing neurotransmitters, they also disrupt pain signals sent by nerves thereby reducing overall body pain.

Mechanism of action:

ANTIDEPRESSANTS inhibit reuptake of neurotransmitters(serotonin and norepinephrine among others) through selective receptors thereby increasing the concentration of specific neurotransmitters around nerves in the brain.

TYPES OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS

- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)

- serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)

- Atypical antidepressants

- Tricyclic antidepressants

- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

- Other Medications

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): SSRIs are prescribed to patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder(MDD). Examples of include the following:

- fluoxetine (Brand name: Prozac)

- citalopram (Brand name: cipramil)

- dapoxetine (Brand name: priligy)

And so on...

Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs):this class of antidepressants are effective in treatment of major depressive Disorder, anxiety disorders and nerve pains. While SSRIs act only on serotonin,SNRIs act on serotonin (feel good chemical) and norepinephrine (alertness and energy chemical). Examples of SNRIs include the following:

- desvenlafaxine

- duloxetine

- levomilnacipran

- milnacipran

- venlafaxine

And so on...

Atypical antidepressants: Atypical antidepressants are frequently used in patients with major depressive disorder who have inadequate responses or intolerable side effects during first hand treatment with SSRIs. Examples of Atypical antidepressants include the following:

- Bupropion (brand name: Wellbutrin)

- mirtazapine (Brand name: remeron)

- trazodone

- nefazodone

And so on...

Tricyclic antidepressants: Tricyclic antidepressant is an old treatment of Depression. They increase the level of serotonin and norepinephrine and block the actions of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter that is released by the nerves that is essential for communication between the nerves and muscles). They treat different types of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, bedwetting, panic disorder, chronic pain(tension headache), chronic itching etc... Examples of TCAs include the following:

- amitriptyline

- amoxapine

- desipramine

- doxepin

- nortriptyline

And so on...

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): MAOIs are separate class from other ANTIDEPRESSANTS treating different forms of Depression and other nervous system Disorders such as panic Disorder, social phobia and Depression with atypical features (highly effective in treatment of Atypical Depressions, high levels of anxiety, anergic Bipolar Depression etc). They work by preventing the breakdown of the brain chemicals serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Examples of MAOIs include the following:

- isocarboxazid

- phenelzine

- selegiline

- tranylcypromine

And so on...

Hence, all antidepressants work in relieving the symptoms of depression but never really cure them. For an antidepressant to start work, it usually needs to be taken for 1-2 weeks (without missing a dose) on average before seeing the full effect.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS

To decipher the side effects of antidepressants, it's important to look into the constituents (recipients) of the drug so as to know which causes the side effects experienced in antidepressants. For the sake of this study,we will be using a more general kind of antidepressants SSRIs, say fluoxetine.

FLUOXETINE (brand name: Prozac):

Generic name: fluoxetine hydrochloride.

Fluoxetine HCl (hydrochloride) or simply fluoxetine is made up of both active and inactive ingredients just as other antidepressants.

Inactive ingredients and their uses:

1. Corn & pregelatinized starch: binder, disintegrant and filler

2. Gelatin: creating of shell(protecting the content from light, atmospheric oxygen, contamination and microbial growth as well as masking taste and odor)

3. Magnesium stearate: causes ingredients to flow more easily and prevents them, as well as tablets, from sticking to machines during production.

4. Propylene: acts as solvent i.e helps in dissolving other solvents without changing their fundamental structure or composition.

5. Sodium lauryl sulfate: emulsifying agent, modified-release agent, tablet and capsule lubricant.

Active ingredient, description and uses:

FLUOXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE:

Fluoxetine hydrochloride (C17H18F3NO.HCL) is a combination of an organofluorine compound FLUOXETINE and a hydrochloride salt. Fluoxetine with a chemical formula as C17H18F3NO(active) belongs to the group of organic compounds known as trifluoromethyl benzene while hydrochloride salt is an acid salt with a chemical formula as HCL(inactive).

I.e

C17H18F3NO + HCL = C17H18F3NO.HCL(fluoxetine antidepressant)

C17H18F3NO.HCL(FLUOXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE i.e fluoxetine antidepressant) BREAKDOWN OF THE MAKEUP INGREDIENTS

ACTIVE INGREDIENT:

NAME: Fluoxetine

CHEMICAL FORMULA: C17H18F3NO

IUPAC name: N-methyl-3-phenyl-3-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]propan-1-amine

PREPARATION & DESCRIPTION: fluoxetine is a chemical compound, a neurotransmitter(serotonin) selective reuptake inhibitor, a low molecular weight, racemic phenoxy phenyl propylamine synthesized/prepared by reaction of p-trifluoromethyl phenol with 3-(chloro)-N-methyl-3-phenylpropylamine in the presence of potassium carbonate.

EFFECT IN DRUG: neuronal serotonin reuptake inhibition ( inhibits the reuptake of serotonin to the neurons thereby making it much available for body system functioning)

INACTIVE INGREDIENT:

NAME: Hydrochloride

CHEMICAL FORMULA: HCL

IUPAC name: hydrogen chloride

PREPARATION & DESCRIPTION: Hydrogen chloride is a hydrogen halide and at room temperature, is a colourless gas which forms white fumes of hydrochloric acid(muriatic acid) upon contact with atmospheric water vapor. Note that hydrochloric acid is the aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride.

In preparation of hydrogen chloride, there are many methods for preparation of industrial HCL, most notably the reaction of salt with sulfuric acid.

But in chemistry(pharmaceutical), hydrogen chloride is an acid salt resulting or regarded as resulting from the reaction of hydrochloric acid with an organic base (e.g. an amine). Because of their important role in drug manufacturing, 15.5% of all drugs contain pharmaceutical HCL.

EFFECT IN DRUG: HCl is mainly used to aid the absorption of medications to the body system.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS IN GENERAL(as a result of both active and inactive ingredients in antidepressants)

While each type has its own side effects. The most common ones include:

physical dependency(though not addictive but when used for a long period of time would cause physical dependence due to body system having adjusted to the medication use)

Nausea

Dry mouth

Insomnia

Dizziness

Diarrhea or constipation

Sexual problems

Fatigue

Weight gain

Tremors

Increased sweating e.t.c

WITHDRAWAL TECHNIQUES

Antidepressants withdrawal techniques include the following:

Tapering: slowly cut back your dose under the guidance of your doctor. This is called tapering. Tapering helps your brain adjust to the chemical changes and can help prevent discontinuation symptoms.

Abruptly stopping: Antidepressant withdrawal is possible if you abruptly stop taking an antidepressant, particularly if you've been taking it longer than four to six weeks. Symptoms of antidepressant withdrawal are sometimes called antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and typically last for a few weeks. When experiencing withdrawal symptoms or antidepressant discontinuation syndrome, increasing physical exercise or changing the diet to include more fresh food may help ease symptoms by making a person feel reinvigorated and less lethargic.

And this made me call Depression the worst disease to ever exist.

Yes!

You are not doing the things you need to do even to get better because the SPIRIT man is weak.

Everything becomes heavier, every single thing. Just because the brain is way dark & damp to accept the simple truth in life & light!

Just because the spirit man is wailing for a dark and damp brain with no life & light!

For this, the spirit man doesn’t want to do anything... Not even the one that will make him cos the brain itself is in drain🤦

DEPRESSION; the Mindset(cognition) & spirit man disease!

Inverse mindset + weak spirit man = depressed physical man:

Inverse mindset (highly deteriorated cognitive ability) due to high level of negative cognition + low level of positive cognition and this in turn(wrong Mindset) brought about; weak spirit man (highly degenerated spirit) that wouldn't allow for any activity cos the buggy brain at first wouldn't allow for making of the spirit man which is the engineer of life and activities thus, making it really heavy to act... And this in turn brought about HIGH LEVEL OF NEGATIVE EMOTIONS & LOW LEVEL OF POSITIVE EMOTIONS i.e DEPRESSION.

Come to think of it, why would the spirit man allow for the physical man to act as thought this same buggy brain that wouldn't allow for the making of the spirit man even though its judgement is right and of good this time around???
